Oily skin type is the most unappreciated among today’s women, not only because it requires extra care, but also because of the problems related to it.
The reasons behind oily skin
In this skin type the sebaceous glands work more intensively than in normal skin types. The reason for that is in the endocrine system – overproduction of male hormones such as testosterone.
In this skin type, the topmost corneous layer of the skin is denser than usual, which leads to obstruction of the pores. The sebum, secreted by the sebaceous glands, remains in the pore, inflaming it and triggering the formation of acne.
The only positive effect of oily skin is that the oily film protects the skin from harmful environmental influences, preserving it younger for longer.
The most common mistakes in caring for oily skin
Overly aggressive cleansing products and techniques
The use of aggressive cleansing products has an opposite effect. Clinical research shows that after an intense degreasing, the skin tries to restore the lost sebum through an intensified overproduction, thus creating an even thicker film of grease than before. It is advisable to use milder cleansing products more often – three times a day. Oily skin has to be cleaned at least twice daily – morning and evening. Good products to use are lotions and cleansing gels designed especially for oily skin prone to inflammation, because they contain anti-bacterial agents which prevent infections.
Popping the pimples
When the pore is obstructed by corneous cells, the sebum remains in it. This mass of sebum, dead cells, impurities and bacteria constitutes the ingredients of the pimple. Inflammation of it causes acne. Removal of the contents of the pimple is not advisable, since this makes the skin prone to serious infections.
Removal of these unpleasant formations should not be undertaken more often than once a week. Clean the skin prior to the procedure and soften it through steaming or other softening methods. Use a clean tissue and clean hands to remove the pimples. After the procedure, the face must be disinfected with alcohol based lotion.
Myths about acne
A popular notion is that acne can develop as a result of consumption of too much sweets, pasta or chocolate. It is also thought that it can be a result of poor hygiene. Such statements are wholly unfounded and can only lead to discomfort. In reality, the factor that can be linked to oily skin is stress. Instead of yielding to myths, consult a specialist who will instruct you in competent care for oily skin and enlarged pores, and may recommend a diet which will benefit your skin condition (such as drinking more water or a special mixture of herbs).
Medication
There are medications which can cause the appearance of acne. Such medications may contain iodine and vitamin B. This side effect should be listed in the instruction leaflet of the drug. Check the ingredients or consult your pharmacist to determine if your acne is caused by medication.
